Though Anencephaly is a serious case, it remains a question why does this Neural Defect happens without any warnings. A mother without a neural defect history, or anyone in the family can be a victim. And though you are taking enough folic acid on or before pregnancy, it’s not still a guarantee that you will not be affected of this Neural Tube Defect (NTD).
Based on the survey made among all the mothers who have had an Anencephaly baby, 8 out 10 responded that Anencephaly happened on their third pregnancy. Though they had been careful from the start of conception, up until the first trimester ends, still they were badly affected by it. While 4 out of 10 mothers had their Anencephaly baby on their first pregnancy.
The only advise that the doctor can give is to take enough folic acid, yet this NTD still happens even after following all the necessary precautions. And no studies have prove yet that taking folic acid is enough to prevent Anencephaly. It's like 1 out of 1000 babies are affected randomly. What's worse is that this can never be treated and no treatment is available for this kind of NTD.
